Client Design Brief – Shaping Spotted Gum House was the client’s pursuit of sustainable design practices, her views on upholding a holistic wellness approach, and her forward-thinking innovation which were all informative to the design. The owners were a couple of near-empty nesters who were devoted to participating in their design process. Having an innovative spirit and invested interest in both personal wellness and sustainability through architecture, our team enjoyed a close, collaborative relationship with the client. The client also challenged our practice to explore, source, and create environmental solutions throughout the architectural process and pushed us to innovate the use of sustainable products, new technologies, and ideas. From the double-glazed windows, geothermal climate control, and inert and low VOC materials – our team was required to deliver technologies, not within reach of many of our smaller domestic projects.

The project comprised alterations and additions to a 1950’s “Tocumwal” cottage in Canberra’s Inner North. The original cottage was relocated to Canberra from a former military intelligence base built during WW2 in the southern NSW town of Tocumwal. It is one of a number of heritage-listed examples of the Tocumwal housing typology remaining in Canberra. The original cottage was retained and refurbished, with minor modifications made to the rear of the house to accommodate a connection through to the new buildings.

La Sylvabelle is a sister to the nearby La Rochelle and occupies the hollow of a valley near the village of Provence, on the site of an old boarding house that replaced a mill. The project is part of a continuous history of successive demolitions and reconstructions that have characterised this place since the Middle Ages.

the design ensures that the natural habitat is not just a backdrop, but is inseparable from the house and part of the life and artistic production of the occupants.

Architecture studio Nameless Architecture has completed the Café Teri bakery in Daejeon, South Korea, in a pair of buildings that flow into a central courtyard. Located at the foot of the Gyeryongsan Mountain in Daejeon, Nameless Architecture designed the two buildings to frame the entrance to a hiking trail that continues up the mountain.
