Located in the Retiro district of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires is the IBM building designed by Mario Roberto Álvarez & Associates. Conceived to house the headquarters of the IBM company, this office building was designed around 1979 and consists of a tower supported by two large concrete structural cores on a base, which is separated from the ground and the shaft of the tower to house the ground floor and a level of common areas in order to maintain the urban scale. The language of the building is recognizable from a distance as it is formed by an enclosure of horizontal bands of glass and exposed concrete parapets-parasols, which achieve a dialogue and balance in the proportion of full and empty spaces.

Yunzhai Village of Changyuan City in Henan Province, where the project is located, is an ordinary village with typical features of rural area in Central China. During the past decades, the villagers’ well-being has been drastically improved thanks to social development, but a series of social problems emerged, too. For example, the outflow of labor resulted in hollowness in local demographic structure; the traditional bonds of families and neighbors been weakened, with problems of ageing and left-behind children remaining unsolved. Correspondingly, public ritual spaces here, either waning or disappearing, are in dire need of reconstruction. As a result, the village decided to build a community center for public gatherings.

This is a home for a young family of four with a great affinity for sports and art located in the suburbs of Prague. The terrain of this property slopes slightly away from the driveway, allowing us to locate the parking on the roof of this one story home, which leaves the main part of the house not visible from the outside except for a volume of the garage. In the ground floor four separate wings each with different function are connected in the main hall which accommodates a curved concrete staircase, a main entrance to the house.

Courtyard Restaurant in Our Village / Someone Studio

September 26, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Since the reform and opening up, with the construction of rural urbanization, the rural population has been continuously transferred to the cities, leaving a large number of idle houses in the countryside. In recent years, with the proposal of the “rural revitalization” strategy, the central and local governments have issued a series of support policies, combined with the pilot reform of the rural homestead system and the integrated development of the primary, secondary and tertiary industries in rural areas, to promote the revitalization and utilization of idle rural homesteads . Encouraged by this policy, the villagers of Shilong Village, Anji, are going to transform their idle yard into a garden-style restaurant, and commission Someone studio for the design. By investigating the existing catering shops in Shilong Village, we found that most of the local shops are in Chinese and European retro styles, and most of them retain the decoration style that was popular 20 years ago. Therefore, in order to widen the gap in visual style with the existing restaurants in the village, and at the same time achieve a higher cost performance, we hope to create the first modern-style garden restaurant in Shilong.

Situated in the heart of Annandale’s heritage precinct, the existing house held a single-story frontage on a narrow lot. The southeast, street-facing, aspect was in reasonable condition – reflective of the original late-Victorian Italianate style. The rear, northwest-facing elements had been significantly altered by an unremarkable modern two-story addition that was in poor repair. The ambitious brief called for a contemporary but respectful reinvigoration of the original areas and a complete reinvention of the rear.

Sitting on a plateau at the base of Mount Lebanon, the AN Guesthouse embraces its landscape by inviting nature into the house. The U-shaped layout is centered on a lush garden, facing the valley and the beautiful views of the mountains. The functionality of traditional Lebanese houses and Japanese courtyards are the core of the house’s spirit. Its courtyard typology creates an interface between the six bedrooms and living quarters. The courtyard is also the “green heart”, shared and accessible by all the rooms around it, rendering it the key element of the project.

The existing Percy street residence is a ‘turn of the century’ double-fronted cottage. The aim of the design was to maintain the current character by using the roof form as the basis for the extension.

Bossa Nova Roasters is a brand that holds many branches of large cafes. We were involved in the architectural design of Bossa Nova Samcheok branch as a long-term project. Being able to do interior design at the stage of construction is a huge merit. There’s more to it than just saving the cost.
