Historical buildings are both a connection between the past and the present, and a way to preserve local memory and culture. They are witnesses of a past era and living examples of specific constructive techniques, styles and materials from another time. Maintaining them is therefore essential in making local communities feel a sense of belonging and shared history, especially if the building is a meeting place in itself, like a church. This is the case of Calvary Episcopal Church – located in the city of Burnt Hills, New York –, a wooden frame construction completed in 1849 that survived a large fire in 1967. In the prominent bell tower, severe leaks became so common that it was feared the structure and 1,000-pound bell were on the brink of collapse. To remedy the situation while maintaining its familiar, signature look, the decision was to use PVC materials, known for their durability. 

It is a compact weekend house built in Ise-Shima National Park. The surrounding area is dotted irregularly with private villas, corporate resorts, and standard housing for permanent residents along the winding road. It’s not a bad place for the owner who wants to spend a relaxing time in a place full of nature with a view of the sea, I felt a sense of incongruity in this townscape without a sense of unity that suddenly appeared in the wilderness of the national park. The southeast side of the site is a cliff about 30m above sea level, and the bottom of the cliff reaches the sea as it is.

There are many housing projects with small plots of land in Vietnam, mostly in urban areas due to the high population density. These land lots are suitable for the income majority. However, its narrowness comes with many weaknesses. The two biggest problems are lack of light and ventilation; especially when combined with the extremely hot and humid tropical climate. Therefore, these projects require Architects’ solutions to solve these problems.

Guided by a design concept of “Library & Art,” this renovation of a commercial building with a fifty-year history provides a place for community members to rest and relax. Our design transforms the spacious atrium into an intimate enclave that resembles a park in some places and a private library in others, offering opportunities for visitors to encounter books and art. Three primary elements compose the space: an assemblage of lights, shelves for encountering stories, and parklike greenery. Comprised of 669 bulbs and 1338 cords, the assemblage of lights is the most distinctive feature of the project. By varying the height of the suspended bulbs, we constructed four ceiling vaults between the columns. Bulbs are suspended like necklace pendants from two thin cords hung at convergent 40-degree angles.

Featuring four guest houses and two spacious meeting halls overlooking a giant fishpond, the Ton Villas were designed for a client who likes to entertain large groups of people. The 3,500sqm property also features a large dining area and a lounge where guests can get together and mingle through games and music.
