What is the Future of BIM? Graphisoft Unveils Archicad 26

August 3, 2022 Valeria Montjoy 0

Considered the second most requested skill (behind field experience) in the industry and used by a growing number of design professionals, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has proved to be the present of architecture. But with constant new features and exciting improvements, it is also very much the future. For decades, the revolutionary software has established itself as a powerful tool with a long list of invaluable capabilities: detecting errors, reducing costs and material waste, mitigating risks, optimizing workflows and, above all, allowing for seamless, multi-disciplinary collaboration.

Emei Gaoqiao Village / Super Normal Design

“Back to the countryside.” Gaoqiao village located in the west of Mount Emei Scenic Area is 40 minutes drive to the urban area. Villagers here cultivated farmlands for generations. Owing to unique spring water and fertile land resources, the village is famous for rice and grass. With the expansion of the city and the development of tourism, it breathes life into the peaceful village. Houses have sprung up all over the rice fields with respect for natural aesthetics. Along the terrain and mountain roads, a cross-season journey has been created. Three buildings are scattered in the green fields silently, close to villages, rice fields, and mountain springs. They are the “residence center” at the foot of the mountain, the “field canteen” in the countryside, as well as the “coffee house” on the terraces.

The site lies in the center of Jakarta, sandwiched between buildings in the middle of a dense neighborhood. It’s a gem so hidden that you can only reach it via a secret entrance to a private residence. Surrounded by concrete jungle in the tropical city, the location is heavily affected by the urban heat island effect. This unbearable heat also increases year by year due to global warming. With these problems in mind, the architects designed a solution that works with the climate. An environmentally friendly yet comfortable haven, built using local materials with simple techniques by local hands.

This site sits in a very dense and developed area of Ahmedabad with a plot size of about 1580 sft. The plot is North facing and square in shape. This was the client’s old house used by the past two generations of the family. He wanted to keep some elements of the ground floor as memory and convert the existing built-up house into a private office with a guest house, so we decided not to change the foundation and build two additional floors giving the whole built form four new elevations. The placement of spaces leads us to plan a house that opens up to the outside view of north and west.

Located in Modernist Caulfield, the original structure was a double-storey, the 1970s, split-level residence in need of reimagining. Referencing the home’s Modernist beginnings while designing a contemporary extension for a growing family was key to the brief but, with the acquisition of the second parcel of land to the south, what began as a single-site, double-storey addition morphed into a double-site, single-level extension. Landscape architects were engaged early in the design phase to ensure an integrated vision for the expanded site.
