In its latest exhibition, Manhattan’s Center for Architecture calls for a “reset.” On view until September 3, Reset: Towards a New Commons, displays projects that “encourage new modes of living collaboratively” and “more holistic approaches to inclusion.”
The building for Gjøvik University College is a learning arena for knowledge and education. The project ties in with the existing learning environment of the university college and provides opportunities for the merging with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
Overall, the gardens are interwoven with the living spaces providing a flowing spatial layout for its inhabitants.

Alexander Martin Architects has completed a new house for a young family in Claygate, Surrey which reinterprets the surrounding Arts & Crafts aesthetic with a contemporary form. The client sought an innovative response to the site and so the house was rapidly built using modern methods of construction, with simple, robust materials used to create an elegant interior and exterior, redefining the aspirations for suburban architecture.

If that one day is a wedge that marks the anniversary of a person’s birthday, the remaining 364 days are a period of ordinary, ordinary life during which a person grows up. People cherish these days. The name of unbirthday, a children’s clothing boutique in Naka-ku, Hiroshima City, may have such a meaning.
Located on the outskirts of Mehsana, this farmhouse was built for the clients who had just one requirement – a three-bedroom house. Hence the architects were given complete freedom to explore various materials, colors, and building techniques. The house was designed based on the principles of passive design. Maximizing the natural flow of air and daylight was necessary for the hot and dry climate of Gujarat located in western part of India. The transition of open and built spaces highlights the use of colors and the play of light and shadows throughout the house
Osaka Gakuin University High School is located in Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, and is affiliated with Osaka Gakuin University. This project required the relocation of the school to a site adjacent to the university campus for high school-university collaboration, as well as seismic reconstruction due to the ageing of the old school building. By collaborating with the university campus, a reasonable facility scale was achieved in anticipation of the declining birthrate and ageing society. In the rebuilding process, a new subject center system was introduced as an educational system, aiming to plan a school for the next generation of education. The new school building consists of a classroom building and a cafeteria building.
Located in South Jakarta, Residence 57 is a merge of two rectangular masses, which compliments the irregular shape of the lot where it is situated. With a 380 sqm building area, the house is designed in tropical style, accentuating modern minimalistic architecture by using only three types of materials, which are solid wood, natural stone, and concrete.
The client had lived in the existing home for almost a decade and was settled on the general ‘feel’ of the house, as well as the size of the existing garden, which meant minimising how much the extension ate into the backyard. Having lived in the house through his mid-20s to mid-30s, it had slowly become more of an adult home over the years. What our client valued about the home was that it felt homely and was not pretentious – it maintained a sense of warmth, which was something he wanted to preserve in the extension.
