The idea of the space began with the client’s brief, which was to have a very flexible office that could be easily transformed into an exhibition space or a place where he could organize small events, workshops, movie screenings, etc. We proposed the curtain as the main architectural element that could divide the space in a very soft way and enable the flexibility that was required. As soon as we started to explore fabric, its potential, and how to enhance its characteristics we started to think about a curved form.

Yuxuan Bridge Tong Guan Stage & Xuan Xing Tower / Atelier Diameter

The Starry Sky Mirror Park in Lin-gang Special Area of Shanghai is embedded with two themes: sponge city ecological technology and astronomical observation. This project is located in Section B, the northern bank of the only wetland in the park. It includes a stage, a tower, and a bridge. The stage is named “Tong Guan” in Chinese, inviting people to gaze at the stars, watch the birds, and enjoy the view of the wetland together with their loved ones all at this very veranda; the only high point in the park is the observatory tower, whose Chinese name “Xuan Xing” depicts the motion of the stars; “Yu Xuan” is the name of the bridge, suggesting the form of the bridge is light as bird-feather.

The client’s desire was to make the best use of the land through construction for lease, making it possible to occupy both as a residence and for commercial use. In this way, a study of the municipal legislation and taking into account the program desired by the client, solar orientation, specificities of the lot and surroundings, and financial issues, a design strategy was defined as a building composed of two floors and the occupation of the lateral distances. , proposing the lighting of the environments through two internal patios, each one located in the respective lateral borders of the land. The main patio works as an integrating element of the en¬tire building, allowing the entry of natural light and the visual connection between the environments. The openings proposed in the front facade also enhance the lighting of the building as well as the contact between the interior and the exterior.
