April 11, 2022 Pilar Caballero 0

The project intervenes on a pre-existing building executed in two phases in the middle of the 20th century. It is placed within a large plot, for residential purposes, adapted from a previous agricultural use located at the intersection of both main avenues of Dehesas, a scattered town. The aim is to create a workplace that provides new possibilities for an aging population and open new collective space at a strategic point in the town.

Dasht-e-chehel villa  is an experience to reach an external-internal life in a cold climate. It is about how to stay out of the building and experience snow and rain but still remain in a safe zone. And how to be inside without losing sensory, visual and psychological connection with the outside. And also how to blur the boundary line between inside and outside to reach a greater freedom.

This project is aimed at renovating a historic site into a community center for a residential complex. The main goals are to remove the sense of secrecy and confidentiality associated with the old KMT facility, to establish a feeling of openness, but still maintain a level of control and enclosure. Using the area’s abundance of trees, grass and plants, we also decided that we would synergize the modern, open architecture with the green nature around it. Therefore, trees and bushes of all sizes are dispersed throughout the complex.

Stable House is the first of a two-stage project for a family compound in the inner-city neighbourhood of Forest Lodge. The master plan for both stages proposes two buildings inserted to minimise the impact onto the bush reserve and views from the terraces. Their roofs slope down to a central garden which will be shared between the two houses and connect with the adjacent native bush reserve. Both homes will have a common outdoor space and shared amenity with the bush reserve.

The main objective for the development of this home for its 4 members was to find the continuous relationship of the spaces with the exterior, making the forest surrounding the project the main player and attraction. The Sea Ranch Lodge reopened to the public in fall 2021 following an extensive revitalization project that breathes new energy into the iconic property while preserving the original architecture and integrity. The remodel honors the vision of the original developer and architects including Al Boeke, Lawrence Halprin, and MLTW (Charles Moore, Donlyn Lyndon, William Turnbull and Richard Whitaker)—stewardship and respect of the land, sustainability for The Sea Ranch and creating a gathering place for residents and neighbors.
