Whether or not architecture is an art, buildings and spaces shape daily life. Pushing the boundaries of architecture and the categorization of art, contemporary investigations between disciplines are rethinking tradition. As transformations grounded in human experience, these installations and structures share qualities of purpose, function and creative expression. At the same time, they reorient the limitations and possibilities of each profession.
Casa Roble is the result of a work inspired by the spatial and material distributions of the houses of yesteryear and the return of the patio as a container element for recreational and social activities. The patio as the main concept of the house was the guideline of the project, but the real challenge was to take this space beyond what was planned. Given that the lot was not very large, only 10x19m (32.80×62.33ft), the patio had to be able to expand, be prepared for surprise visits, and a lot of movement. For these reasons a gate was designed that accommodated two clearly divided spaces, the garage, and patio, but this element, when traversed, had to leave room for a large central space. The gate was the indicated element that would give us all this flexibility. Its aesthetic was planned to blend in and not be distinguished literally.
Bloomberg Philanthropies has announced the 15 winning innovations of its 2021-2022 Global Mayors Challenge. The Marfa Suite is a detached addition to an existing single bedroom adobe home in Marfa, Texas. The suite is conceived as a lounge, art studio, and refuge for the owners to stay when guests visit the remote town for extended stays. The low-maintenance earthen structure is made primarily from compressed earth block that provides a warm atmosphere and is a direct nod to the historical vernacular adobe structures that exist along the US Mexico border, the greater North American Southwest region, and the owners existing home.
