Republica Building Heritage Intervention / MSRAA – Martin Schmidt Radic Arquitectos Asociados

November 2, 2021 Valeria Silva 0

The heritage intervention proposal on this derelict property seeks to redirect its use with an orientation towards flexible workspaces to enhance and diversify the educational nature of the sector. For this, it is necessary to reinforce and rebuild the original facades and construct a new building that reconstitutes the rhythm of use and activity that today has been interrupted by the programmatic void left by the fire leaving the scenographic facade. To be known as a mixed space, both in its use and its materiality, which considers in its proposal the vestige of the destroyed house, where you can work, eat, walk, and take pleasure of, in the middle of the university neighborhood of Santiago.

The intervention focuses on the reform of a farmhouse from the 18th century hosting a pension linked to the north part of the Camino de Santiago, located on the outskirts of the traditional nucleus of Madelos en Sobrado dos Monxes and bordering Concello de Boimorto. The building has had different extensions over time, until the 1970s when it was abandoned due to its poor condition. During this time the wooden structure has deteriorated and part of the slate walls have collapsed. The process of abandonment, as in many rural areas due to the exodus from rural to urban areas, causes a transformation in the landscape. Thus, social and cultural changes end up shaping the landscape.

There is always a cup of ocean for man to sail in. This verse, written in 1952 by Jorge de Lima, a Brazilian poet from the northern state of Alagoas, was featured on the poster of the 29th Art Biennial of São Paulo. Now more than ever, its interpretation suggests a breath of fresh air in a time of new beginnings.

The redesigned Hitotomori space functions as a design office, guesthouse, and cafe and is our primary working location.

It was believed that the theme of this building was to design a way of living in a city that was comfortable, open, and transmitted to the outside while maintaining safety because the owner wanted to make it a small but open house for people outside. Even the site conditions were harsh, the owner’s strong will to “still want to live here” became a small house with a wide-open door in the alley. We hope this door will be the door of hope that opens the way we live in cities.
