An unstable socioeconomic reality is at the base of the Casa Torre (Tower House) project. The prospect of an uncertain future shaped the program to which it tries to respond by erecting a watchtower from which to overcome the challenges to come. Casa Torre is located at the top of a small hill in a basically flat coastal city, which provides unexpected and exceptional views.

What is Equity in Architecture and Design?

November 4, 2021 Camilla Ghisleni 0

The definition of equity in dictionaries is the quality of giving equal treatment to everyone while still acknowledging the differences between individuals. In this sense, equity means fairness in the way we act toward each person but keeping in mind his or her specific characteristics and needs. From a medical perspective, equity implies that everyone needs care and attention but not necessarily the same. It is also worth mentioning that the terms equity and equality are often used interchangeably but they mean different things, mainly because equality is based on the principle of universal rights, in which all individuals are subject to the same rules, without exception.

Goatbarn Lane / Renée del Gaudio

Goatbarn Lane explores the power of less. When a form is reduced to its bare elements, every element of the form grows in impact. Size becomes insignificant. Design challenges become easier to solve. The form, footprint, and interior design of Goatbarn Lane reflect the philosophy of living with what we need – and no more.

Staying in Paris – Une surélévation à Paris / Java Architecture

November 4, 2021 Andreas Luco 0

A crazy client. The story begins when we received a strange email asking for our help at the beginning of autumn 2017. The author explained to us that he and his wife just bought a house in ruins situated on the back of a Parisian courtyard and that they wanted to transform it into their family house. After a quick chat on the phone, we realised that this family just bought a pile of old stone without knowing if they would be able or allowed to do something out of it. For us, the client was completely crazy or a genius, without knowing the correct answer we decided to take part in this adventure which was going to last for a few years and hopefully helps a middle-class family to stay in Paris.

Miyashita Park / Nikken Sekkei

A New Era – A new take on Relaxation and Activation – In Japanese cities, urban development is dense and public facilities and amenities have evolved whereby multiple functions occupy the same land. This dense development also means that open spaces such as parks are treasured. Furthermore, in recent times public spaces are becoming commercial spaces and commercial spaces are becoming public spaces. This fusion of parks, commerce, and hotels has created a new synthesis of “relaxation” and “activity” that people have really come to desire. MIYASHITA PARK is a project that raises issues from both the public side and the commercial side about the ideal state of “public space” in this new era.
