Villa West / MASA Architects

Rotterdam-based office MASA architects designs an elegant living space from a former sports building. An abandoned former war period sports building (constructed in the 1940s) was never intended to be renovated. Real estate developers thought of demolishing it as no one would imagine making anything useful out of it. However, the client bought the site and decided to turn the ‘useless’ building into a private villa. Converting this space into a livable environment presented a special challenge and made this project a unique experience.

With this project, we look at regeneration with fresh eyes. We open up the building, not only on the façade but also at its heart, the interior courtyard. We enhance the district’s vibrancy, create a stronger connection to the community, and discover an inspiring future for the old neighborhood of Hongkou District.

Bamboo Hill – Tianjin Vision Hill Plaza / Origin Architect

In the last few decades, there has been an unprecedented scale of human migration on the land of China. Countless simple youths born in the countryside have left their native land, experienced drifting and tempering, and finally merged into the vast sea of people in the city, becoming a cornerstone of the urban development. However, there are 350,000 pieces of natural bamboo strips from the bamboo sea in the south of the Yangtze River coming to the northern metropolis after traveling about 1,200km, and setting up a stage to support Tianjin’s fashion life. This is an unexpected encounter between the rural nature and the metropolis, and also a long-lost reunion between the wandering youth and the source of life.

Villa Marteau Concert Hall / peter haimerl.architektur

An underground concert and practice hall has been added to the historic villa of the Haus Marteau music centre in Lichtenberg, Upper Franconia. The shape of the hall was inspired by the area’s former mining tradition. Alexander von Humboldt, the famous German naturalist, and explorer, even worked here as a master miner before he later became famous for his global expeditions. The room is shaped by 33 large granite “splinters” which direct the sound and ensure perfect acoustics.

The project refers to a vacation house that is developed in multiple levels, on a steep slope on the island of Antiparos. Οriented towards the East, the plot offers a direct view of the island of Paros, as well as visibility to the islands of Cyclades nearby.

Showroom bulthaup Sant Cugat / Francesc Rifé Studio

With the feeling of opening a chapter in the history of the German kitchen brand, softness, details, and warmth mark the new image of bulthaup Sant Cugat. Its new interior, more intimate and personal, is the result of the collaboration between the designer Francesc Rifé and the showroom’s owner and designer, Caterina Masferrer. “The idea behind the new design is to evoke family warmth and take the project towards a more domestic concept,” they explain. More like a home than a business, more private than exposed, closer than impersonal. To achieve this, serene materials and a warm chromaticism have been selected rooted in the identity of bulthaup. The natural or stained oak in different tones is balanced with the concrete floors, while the neutrality of the walls and concrete ceilings shape most of the space.
