The footbridge is located north of Chang’an Town, near the entrance of the Chang’an Experimental Primary School at the foot of Mt. Lianhua. An expressway, Lianhu Rd., runs west-east in front of the school’s entrance plaza. The bridge was intended to offer students and other residents from the south easy access to the northern campus by bypassing the traffic of Lianhu Rd.

Standing out distinctly in the day – its façade conceptualized as a mosaic of horizontal volumes mirroring the Purist style of the early 1900s, its volume dissipates into one of a gently illuminated silhouette exuding a comforting warmth long into the night.

The client, a filmmaker, and a poet, acquired an eclectically terraced hillside property abutting Elysian park in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. The previous owner decorated the backyard in a lyrical antique style with circuitous crumbling stairs winding up the hill and a hand-made shack on the brink of collapse. Inspired by the whimsical setting, the client wanted to replace it with a writing studio and guest house that evoked the past but was firmly contemporary.
