Curtains can provide a freer and more dynamic flow in architecture. These elements are usually intended to protect the interior from sunlight or create visual privacy, but they are also used as decoration or as room dividers. Since they are very movable and flexible, curtains are becoming a popular choice for architects and interior designers, creating layers between interior and exterior spaces that transform the environment through light and shade. Here, we have gathered some examples of projects that use curtains, particularly in the facades, showing how this solution can affect the overall impression of the design.
CHYBIK + KRISTOF architects & urban designers and DÍLNA have created a new design for Brno’s historic Mendel Square. Part of a large revival plan for the city, the design pays homage to the city’s rich cultural past. Partnering with local practice DÍLNA, landscape architect Zdenek Sendler, and engineering firm PK Ossendorf, the team exposed the square’s core functional and historic role to drive change in the urban fabric.

Hotel Bohinj, the former Hotel Kompas was built spontaneously over the last three decades, without thinking about its final appearance. It is raised on a plateau, which gives it a special intimacy, with views of Lake Bohinj, the mountains and the church of Janez Krstnik. The new owners of the hotel decided for radical overhaul including structural reinforcement, interior refurbishment and sustainable renovation.
The project tackles an interstitial space between municipalities, at the convergence of the Collserola and Marina ranges, besides the Rec Comtal and Besós natural spaces. The project’s area has historically been the rear side of both municipalities becoming a space degraded by illegal thrash dumping carried out over the years, generating the disengagement of the citizens with the area. The goal of the project is to consolidate and improve a pedestrian connection, currently inaccessible and insecure, between Vallbona and Can Sant Joan.
The submitted work is a cork-clad, mass timber house built on a relatively inaccessible site, the subdivided portion of a house designed by Julian Elliott. The site is 13.5m meters wide and 30m long. The short side is at the end of a cul-de-sac. There is a river running through the site. Prescribed setbacks from the river and the back wall allowed for a 4.5m deep floor plan.

Like many Gulf cities, Doha’s recent meteoric growth has resulted in a dramatic expansion of its urban footprint fueled by the automobile. This progressive project aims to change this direction of travel by creating a dense, walkable neighbourhood knit together by naturally cooled streets built at a human scale. Set in the heart of the city, there are more than 100 buildings, each distinct yet all expressing a shared architectural language rooted in the local culture and climate.
