UNStudio has won the competition to redesign Sochi Waterfront with a masterplan that creates the framework for a vibrant urban environment for the local community while shaping a new identity for the notorious leisure resort on the Black Sea coast. Dubbed SoCo, the proposal seeks to create a year-round destination that would provide visitors with new attractions within Russia’s most important holiday destination, building on existing natural and cultural resources. At the same time, the design strategy focuses on shaping a close connection to the landscape and natural environment, building the foundation for inclusive neighbourhoods that would bring together various social groups.

The building is the first museum dedicated to the famous World War II hero Witold Pilecki and his family. It is one of the last places to commemorate him, as his family home near Lida was demolished after the war, and the traces of its surroundings were obliterated. The design is a result of balancing three elements: a historic house, a new pavilion, and a garden.

A house with open corners – Lee Lee Heon stands on a side road not far from the main road, and it is a complex building of lower-level rental commercial space and upper-level residential space. The building’s corners were actively opened so that passerby could easily recognize commercial rental spaces located on the backside road from the main road on the first and second floors. The corners mostly open to the alleyway, which meets multi-family houses built in the same form around the 1990s, creates a staircase at the corners visually connected to the main road naturally links the movement line to the second floor’s commercial space.
