Westerschans 1B is the second phase of the urban development integration plan that Jeanne Dekkers Architectuur and ZOETMULDER designed for the entire Westerschans area. This development consists of three building complexes with a varied program of social housing, owner-occupied apartments, commercial spaces, sheltered housing, a supermarket, catering establishments and a hotel. The Westerschans area directly borders the historic city centre of Goes, the ring-road, and the water of the Havenkanaal.

Between Zha Pu Road Bridge and Sichuan Road Bridge, there is a semi-underground building, which is used for municipal services such as plantation shift rooms. Part of the shift room is an accessible roof, the other a group of square cone glass skylights. With the development of the city, the urban function of the Suzhou River has changed from the urban channel to the living waterfront space with landscape and public activities. The shift room could not meet the needs of the new function. Therefore, its remodeling is required.

D1’s design challenges long-standing architectural ciché by bringing the interior design up front to turn the façade into a scenery itself. D1 has been working with local craftsmen to imbue the spirit of Danang into each design element.
This was the client’s second house after their renovated 1930’s house in Clayfield Brisbane had tragically burnt down. They agonized over whether to rebuild or sell and start again. A property came up for sale in Highgate Hill which had the most extraordinary location. Riverfront, high above the water looking through trees to the south with unimpeded northern views. It also had a landscaped easement (un-trafficable) down to the river which visually extended the width of the property.
