Renovation of Shanghai Westbund Headquarters / HCCH Studio

May 28, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

Westbund Development Group Headquarter locates on the West Bund of Shanghai, adjacent to Westbund Art Center, looking at Huangpu river on its east. The site is packed with lush trees, such as pomelo and camphor. Heavy wind, rustling trees, and dim light make up the impression of the site. The existing building was a two-story steel structure built in 2008. The floor area was 2000sqm and the grid’s dimensions were 6X6m. The major entrance was on the west side. The facade was covered by brown aluminum louvers. Dense landscape, vague circulation, and isolated atrium render the interior illegible.

During the first field survey, the plan was to understand the overview of the surrounding buildings, but it was canceled. This is because Jeju Island already embodies lots of great emotions: the vibrant blue sea, rough but novel wind, yellow-colored Canola flower fields, black basalt stones, and the sway of the reed field while walking on gentle hills are unique experiences that are different from the daily life on the mainland. With the hope that the building will not disturb these good feelings and harmonize with its natural environment, we’ve set the course for the great concept of “just being here.”

Archi-Tectonics converted a long and narrow industrial structure in SoHo into a spacious and flexible 8-story family home. The size of the space was doubled by adding a 4-story structure to the original townhouse, and by unifying the two volumes with a 3d envelope: the Climate Skin.
