The Eastern Influences that Shaped Soviet Architecture in Central Asia
In the second half of the 20th century, Soviet architecture has spread a common aesthetic across highly diverse environments, being an integral part in promoting the totalitarian ideology that disregarded local cultures, envisioning a unified, homogenous society. Nevertheless, in practice, the architecture proved itself susceptible to adaptations and local influences, perhaps nowhere more than in Central Asia. The article looks at the architectural heritage of a geographical area largely excluded from the Western-centric narratives on Soviet Modernism, encouraging a re-reading of a layered and nuanced urban landscape, with images by Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego.

P-House / Tigges Architekt + Energiehaus
P-House is located in Girona (Spain) and consists of a single building with four winds; its location in the upper part of the plot allows its inhabitants to enjoy privileged views. The building combines contemporary design with the criteria of a very low-energy consumption building (NZEB), and its high-energy efficiency has been certified by the German Passivhaus standard.

Graux & Baeyens Architecten has modernised a 1960s bungalow in De Haan, Belgium, by opening up the interior and adding cross-shaped steel supports to the main living spaces. The Ghent-based studio said the existing bungalow had an “uninspiring original construction” and set about creating a series of flexible spaces that could adapt to the needs

Buddha Artist’s Exhibition Space and Studio, THE FIELD / TEAM_BLDG
Background
Located in Huli District, Xiamen City, at the former site of an aluminum factory, the building was originally a public bath of the factory. In 2019, it was partially renovated after the aluminum factory was transformed into a creative office park with multiple businesses. TEAM BLDG was asked by Buddha artist Jiang Sheng, to transform the public bath into a new studio and exhibition space called ‘the field’. The Chinese name of The Field is called “Ji Le Chang”, which is derived Buddhism, meaning the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss or Sukhavati, but “THE FIELD” is not intended to be an isolated pure land. The owner hopes to separate the concept of “isolated and unreachable” and create an appealing spiritual place.

This single-storey dwelling is located in a farming village in Seiro Town, Niigata Prefecture. The area offers a glimpse of a farming culture established long ago. It’s a place where this industry born of the sun and soil carries on hand in hand with village life much as it has for hundreds of years. Here men and women live and work the land day in and day out, in harmony with nature and all it has to offer.
