Twin Apartments / Estúdio Lava

December 1, 2020 Andreas Luco 0

When we faced the challenge of refurbishing two duplex apartments, the same but mirrored, for rental in a residential building still under construction, we sought at the same time to standardize some points of the project in order to facilitate the refurbishment phase that would happen concomitantly with the end of the building of the tower itself, but we also sought to give some kind of identity to each unit. Our proposal was to develop a unique project for both apartments, but applying the colors defined for the project in an inverted way in the floor and volumes of carpentry, alternating these between green and coral. For the kitchen and bathrooms, we used white countertops, more neutral, either in iron plate or in white granite, creating a dialogue with some already existing materials and delivered with the apartments.

But what do architects do to further enhance the building performance? That is an exciting element to explore. Finding out that today digital technologies are implemented in buildings in every region of the world is an interesting fact to discover!

During this unprecedented era of social distancing and working from home, ABB with Katrin Förster have launched a video series called “Frozen Music” to give architects a platform to both see and share successful building design around the globe. Below is Episode #6, the VIETTEL Headquarters in Hanoi, Vietnam, designed by Gensler.

In this case, the proposal was that of a volume with austere geometry, simple lines and symmetrical proportions. A red-clad silhouette that bursts into the surrounding landscape and imposes itself with the warmth of its native woods illuminated by the setting sun. Outside, the structure is weather-proofed with a low-maintenance metal envelope, while the entrances are clad in lenga shingles, overlapped in the local style. On one end, a solitary floating bench invites us to watch the sunset while, on the opposite end, protected from the wind, a grill is no stranger to the local traditions of gathering around the fire and the barbecue.
