The house is located in the middle of a small alley with only 50 square meters of land, which is a gentle intersection between modern architecture and a bit nostalgic… It includes 3 bedrooms, living room, kitchen and small playground. Although the area is quite limited, the home space is still filled with light and feels close to nature. Besides, the living room is also a place to connect family members giving them a space to talk together. Sometimes it is also a corner reminiscent of childhood with old items. The most arresting image, among many, in the documentary Laurel Canyon: A Place in Time, directed by Alison Ellwood, is a black-and-white photograph of Eric Clapton visiting Los Angeles for the first time on tour with Cream. He sits a few feet from Joni Mitchell, who is playing guitar, with a visibly stoned David Crosby in the background on the backyard lawn of Cass Elliot’s house. Clapton observes Mitchell with such a smoldering intensity you think he’s going to blow an amp. He is transfixed by Mitchell not because she was striking—and she was—but because of her musicianship.
The new building replaces a complex of modernist building volumes that used to occupy the entire site and could not be adapted to today’s sustainability standards. As the Antwerp city centre has few public green surfaces, the transformation of the site from a merely private, mineral, and infrastructural area into a public garden is a crucial requirement of the competition brief. Surrounded by fragments of public green, the parcel is key to the formation of a larger, coherent park. Another – contradictory – demand was to maintain a more recent representational pavilion, which was positioned as an obstacle in between the fragments.
