Experiential Shelter: 600 Kinetic Shingles Reinvent the Traditional Finnish Hut

July 9, 2020 Lilly Cao 0

Designed by NEON, the Shiver House is a radical reinvention of the common Finnish Hut (mökki). The project is a kinetic “animal-like” structure which moves and adapts in response to surrounding natural forces. Shiver House is an exploration into the idea that architecture can be used as a means to create a closer emotional link between its inhabitants and the natural world it sits within. In addition, the project explores the idea that architecture can be made to seem “alive” with the intention that this will engender a deeper and longer-lasting emotional relationship between people and the structures they inhabit.

A new identity. Assen Station was originally a transit station where the city remained invisible to travelers. The municipality of Assen, therefore, asked for a transparent and inviting station on the regional level, which would at the same time remove the barrier of the tracks on the neighborhood level. Powerhouse Company and De Zwarte Hond designed the new station as an all-sided building – connective, transparent and sustainable – that is equally inviting from every angle. The impressive triangular geometry of the roof gives the building a strong identity, organizes the program and also makes a connection with the urban context.

Concept and space
The social health center in the San Felice sul Panaro area will provide services for disabled people, as well as provide health care services for nine cities in northern Modena. The land around the building site is filled with various crops, which inspired the shape of the building barn, and these familiar images create a sense of security for the residents. The social health center is divided into two floors, the ground floor is the activity area, and the top floor is the rest area. The building consists of 4 interrelated volumes, which are only visible from the outside, while the interior is a continuous spatial form.

The brief was to design a temple for the residents of villages around Nandyal. In the dry terrain of Nandyal, the main concern was to provide a space which would marry the socio-cultural expectations of a temple with the ecological framework and dynamics of and around the site. The immediate context of Cotton and chilly farms in the region were fed by a natural canal system which had dried up.
