Located in Pingshan New Area, northeast of Shenzhen, the 13.5km Pingshan River originates from Meisha Jian with its main stream traversing Pingshan New Area from southwest to northeast. Amid the regional economic and social development boom, declined water quality and ecological deterioration of Pingshan River took a toll on the riverfront and downstream urban environment.

Lantern Studio / Flavin Architects

The Lantern Studio is set beside a traditional Dutch Colonial home in Wellesley. While still being visible from the street, the setback respects the context of traditional houses, and established pattern of accessory garages being located behind the primary dwelling. The building is placed behind a spectacular glacial erratic boulder and becomes the focal point of the backyard entrance. Low grasses are planted around the boulder, in keeping with the manicured gardens typical of the neighborhood. The landscape to the rear is left raw and wild, with rock outcroppings that nature can overtake in time.

Those who take a peek at architecture and life beyond in urban areas that they would not have looked back on in the past are often found around us, and architects are also agile in responding to such changes and presenting various works. Our Shingongdeok-dong Micro House is also a common and plain small house that was born at the site of this rustic disorder.

Yard Apartment / Qisi Design

Qisi Design was commissioned to renovate a tiny house with a yard. The house is located on the ground floor of a historic conservation building on Huaihai Road, Shanghai . After years of property division, the house is now only 25 square meters. The new owner hopes to transform it into a short rent home. The designer carries out the design around the goal of “how to create a warm, comfortable place that can accommodate a variety of activities in a 25 square meter space”. The designers fully develop the space potential of small houses by establishing indoor and outdoor connections, making use of mezzanine and function superposition. Finally, the designers create a rich space that has complete living function and can accommodate the party of many people.
