Breaking Boundaries: Revolutionary Design in Paraguay’s Rural Homes

December 31, 2019 Eric Baldwin 0

Paraguay’s architecture radically transformed in the last century. For much of the country’s history, indigenous Guarani culture was the primary influence on the built environment. Later, colonialism would shape its cities and settlements. Today, the landlocked country has begun finding new ways to build upon its past, showcasing how residential design can break from tradition.

SDC Dental Clinic / Takeru Shoji Architects

December 31, 2019 Daniel Tapia 0

The site is in Akiba town, Tsubame city, Niigata prefecture. We designed a clinic that is more than just a dental clinic, it is a daycare center, a bookstore and a place to enjoyably spend time, just ‘like a park’. Where a typical dental clinic is not a place to linger, this dental clinic encourages patients to come to the clinic for more than just their appointment, it gives them abundant ways of leisurely spending their time before and after their appointment. All occupants of the clinic are encouraged to spend their time ‘as they please’ enjoying the bookstore or daycare center. This gives way to a new type of dental clinic, which is ‘a place to stay’, ‘come again’ and comfortably spend time.

Capsule Hotel and Bookstore in Village Qinglongwu / Atelier tao+c

December 31, 2019 Collin Chen 0

Hidden in the deep forests of Tonglu in Zhejiang province, Qinglongwu is an ancient village named after a stream passing through. An old house of wood structure and mud walls is entrenched along a road in the village, facing the green mountains in the south and east side and a lower courtyard in the north. Commissioned by the client, Atelier tao+c redesigned and regenerated this 232sqm old building by inserting a capsule hotel that can accommodate 20 people, a community bookstore and library into the 7.2-meter high two-stories space. The biggest challenge to the architects, and the key to the design, is to ensure the privacy of the accommodation area while giving openness and continuity to the public areas within such a compact space.

Public spaces such as lobby, restaurant and other dining areas are planned on the first floor, while second to the fourth floor are planned only for guest rooms. The relationship between the garden and the rooms are expressed in a multi-layered space.

Bellevue Hill Apartments / Glyde Bautovich

December 30, 2019 Paula Pintos 0

Our design for this site was primarily a reaction to the overlooking and minimal separation from neighbouring apartment buildings to the east and west. Carving out courtyards in the middle of the building meant we did not have to rely on the boundaries as much for views, light, and air.
