Central Park Road Residence / studiofour

An existing 1970’s house originally comprised of brown brick with small windows, dark interior spaces and walls covered in superfluous decoration, our focus was to return the house to its unadorned honest form. By understanding the homes grounding tectonic and by paring back the openings required in the front façade and adding an oversized eave, a solidity and truthfulness was returned to the building form, the house reduced to a more honest purism of its former self.

Slender House / FORM | Kouichi Kimura Architects

The house is located in the subdivision accessible from a suburban arterial road. It has been planned in the strip- shape lot; with narrow width and large depth. In the vicinity are the houses built by house-building companies or local builders. We then aimed to build a house that possesses dignified presence with both designability and coziness in such a cluttered townscape. The exterior is composed of volumes with carefully examined proportion, window layout, and materials. The window with height and the overhang porch emphasize vertical and horizontal lines, making the facade not too much uniform.

Lakeside Plugin Tower / People’s Architecture Office

July 28, 2019 Collin Chen 0

The Lakeside Plugin Tower is 480 square meters of live/work housing. It is developed in partnership with the Shenzhen Institute of Building Research, a leader in sustainable building design and urban development, as a prototype for the Xiong’an New Area, an important ‘model city’ currently being developed by the central government. Xiong’an is located 100km Southwest of Beijing, and is planned as a clean, affordable and congestion free alternative to the capital. To keep housing affordable in the new city, all housing will be state-owned and subsidized. It is conceived as a low carbon eco-city using 100 percent clean electricity with 10% of the area protected as permanent farmland.

Machiya House / Downie North Architects

July 28, 2019 Daniel Tapia 0

Machiya House beautifully blends old with new in a Sydney heritage setting. Inspired by the traditional Japanese townhouses (Machiya) of Kyoto, its private and public domains discreetly co-exist, with layers of screening and curated openings to draw in light and engage the streetscape. Located on a small, exposed corner site in the Iron Cove Heritage Conservation Area in Balmain, Sydney, the design sought to create a contemporary home that engaged with the street and respected its heritage. The original semi-detached dwelling suffered from a lack of light, space and disconnection with the outdoors.

The site is located near the main intersection of Xizhou Town; right in front of a triangle-shaped park attached to a small parking lot. There are village roads on the north and south side of the house, neighbor’s building on the east side, and open space on the west. The open space on the west side interestingly formed a semi-public courtyard with a well in the center, where villagers often drop by to do their daily washing.
