Tre Søstre Housing / Salmela Architect

July 2, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

Tre Søstre is located in the village of Grand Marais, Minnesota. The setting is defined by the rugged shore of Lake Superior to the east, a steep hillside sloping up to a prominent ridge line, with a vast boreal forest stretching north to the arctic. The area was first inhabited by the Ojibwa, with French fur traders and Scandinavian fishermen settling the area in the early 20th century. Today the town remains a remote village with an economy based largely on outdoor recreation and tourism enabled by the proximity to Lake Superior and nearly 4 million acre Superior National Forest.

Olympic House / 3XN

July 2, 2019 Paula Pintos 0

Incorporating the historic setting of the park, home to the eighteenth-century castle LeChâteau de Vidy, was a crucial aspect of the project. Located inside a public space that welcomes a diverse group of visitors, Olympic House becomes an emblematic architectural landmark for the local community, exemplifying accessibility and transparency. The shores of Lake Geneva are a protected area, and therefore 3XN, working with the IOC, approached the project with the intent to achieve the highest level of integration within the surrounding environment. The neighboring Château de Vidy, a building included in the Canton de Vaud’s architectural census, has been renovated, with the original facades restored to their original condition.

Hut of Silver Chapel / KUMA & ELSA

July 2, 2019 Daniel Tapia 0

Hut of Silver is a small public facility in Attignat-Oncin – a 400 inhabitants village in eastern France. This village is part of the Natural Regional Park of Chartreuse, and a third of its land is woodland. The 17th-century Saint-Martin church is an important landmark that stands tall in the center of the village, together with the Primary School and the Town Hall. In 2018 the District Council launched an open competition to design and build a public landscape feature that would remind a childhood hut, in woodland adjacent to the church.

Hoa’s House / ioa-studio

July 2, 2019 Pilar Caballero 0

Our friend Hoa took a huge risk and bought the oldest building she could find. The 150 year old kings arms hotel on Queensberry Street didn’t have a straight bone in it. After many design iterations, curved walls allowed the plan to divide the small and awkward existing title. As the curves were the key when dividing the space, we found that it also connected perfectly to the existing archway that once connected the old pub to the boarding house. We wanted to create a sense of height adding a third hidden bedroom into the existing roof space of the old pub. By removing the ceiling lining and structure from upstairs, this allowed us to create a whole new level and space, whilst making a double height space that connects the upper level to the open mezzanine.
