Stray Bird Boutique Hotel / STUDIO QI

June 5, 2019 Collin Chen 0

STRAY BIRD is a cutting-edge boutique hotel, located in one of the most magnificent places on earth: an isolated oasis encircled by both the Yellow River and Tengger Desert in CHINA’s Ningxia Autonomous Region. STRAY BIRD sits quietly in the blossom orchard, while gazing through the reeds; a green train runs slowly alongside the endless horizon of the desert.  With such a unique landscape, STRAY BIRD is thus required to challenge the traditional rammed-earth architectural typography, and to re-present itself in an ecological and airy structure. Such design also inspires continual discussions of architectural transparency, thereby engendering new definitions for localization.

The Beginning of Draindot
Our client seemed to be confused. She purchased a land lot she fell in love with during a vacation, out of a simple thought that she wanted to live in the Jeju Island, and that was the beginning of Draindot. Started with high expectation, the first building design was a failure, and things were rough for her until she met ilsang_workroom to re-design, and started re-building with us, STARSIS, step by step. As you can see, Draindot started with just a vague idea.

By carring the historical memory of the old industrial architecture, the building becomes an old man ever since the reconstruction work is done. Its space carries the historical memory of old industrial buildings clearly, which is an important theme of the design. Four years later, the expanding construction started in order to bring more professional classrooms to students.

In order to make the NGV garden more visible, we first have to render it invisible. Garden Wall hides the garden and then gradually reveals it via a series of corridors, apertures and rooms. Our installation is less the walls themselves than the spaces between, which were already latent in the garden.
