Rethinking Sacred Spaces for New Purposes

May 7, 2019 Fernanda Castro 0

In the wake of the recent fires at Paris’ Notre Dame and the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, we have seen many architects propose new ways of rebuilding these sacred spaces, opening them up to new possibilities.

Historically, after the decline of the Catholic Church and the increasing loss of faith in several locations in Europe and in North America, the maintenance costs and the disuse of sacred spaces has led to the eventual abandonment of churches, shrines and monasteries with great architectural and historical value.

This opens a new opportunity for investors and architects to rescue and re-contextualize the historical heritage of these buildings. Below we present 15 examples of adaptive reuse in ancient churches–transformed into hotels, homes, museums, libraries and other cultural spaces.

Il Sereno Hotel / Patricia Urquiola Studio

May 7, 2019 Pilar Caballero 0

Il Sereno has been built on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como on an existing Darsena, an historical pre-existence of state-owned inalienable. A 30-suite hotel surrounded by the Italian Alps, reinterprets the rationalism of the Casa del Fascio by Giuseppe Terragni, with a contemporary accent. The lake it’s always present: every room, as well as the common areas, have a lake view. The presence of the lake is evident in the material and color palette of the entire Hotel: materials are all natural and mainly from the nearby area, like Pietra di Fossena for the pavement and Ceppo Lombardo for the facade and for some interiors. The color palette includes green, light-blue, copper, grey and natural tones.

2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition -Blossom Pavilion / MAYU Architects

Blossom Pavilion is a permanent pavilion of 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition, intended for floral exhibition, competition and education. Located outside the Houli Horse Ranch, the site is a vast, uninterrupted grassland surrounded by beautiful landscape. Thus, we propose to use human body centered on the landscape as the datum point from which the panoramic perception projects out to form the pavilion’s circular plan. We desire to create a “void” structure, in which one occupies within but feels like standing beneath the sky.
