The Living Lab, Traditional Clan Estate / HAO Design

February 25, 2019 Collin Chen 0

In this project, the home is more than 60 years old. Although it is a three-sectioned compound, it is not laid out in a traditional “embracing the courtyard” fashion. This reflects the fact that the previous home owners built it up section by section based on the clan’s economic means. It is close to Pingtung railway station. Because this part of town was developed earlier in history and the demographics have aged over time, the homes in this area include a mix of independent houses, makeshift temporary houses and three-sectioned compounds. From the rooftop, one can observe the passage of time through the style of buildings. When we first started the project, the roof was caving in like ruins. My task was to figure out how to “adapt” the home to a modern lifestyle without tearing down most of the walls, even though some of them were already crumbled.

The firm required not just a workspace for its growing team, but also a series of spaces for hosting and entertaining their clients. As such, the existing single unit, multi-storey former residence was transformed into a gleaming corporate hub for a private entity that seamlessly integrates business and leisure.

The motives
Enjoy leisure, be peaceful so that the mind reaches out, be care-free and be far from the dust. The building is named as “ChengRanJu”, which comes from a famous paper by a Scholar Cui Xian in the Ming Dynasty and which literally means “worry-free happiness”. This state of mind is like those ancient hermits who live in bamboo forests with tranquilities. To sum up, the name of the building implies seeking peace of mind by getting rid of all things flashy.
