Korean Curiosity: Is Seoul Experiencing a “Neo-Brutalist Revival”?

During his frequent travels to Seoul, Hong Kong– and Singapore-based photographer Raphael Olivier noticed a new trend taking the South Korean capital: a crop of geometric, concrete buildings of all genres. He calls the new style Neo-Brutalism, after the modernist movement that proliferated in the late 1950s to 1970s, in which raw concrete was meant to express a truth and honesty. Olivier’s observation led him to capture the phenomenon in a personal photo series—a photographic treasure trove of these projects which, when taken as a whole, uncovers a cross-section of this trend in the city’s architecture.

Double Duplex / Batay-Csorba Architects

The Double Duplex infill project is located on Melbourne Avenue in Toronto’s Parkdale neighbourhood, notable for its century-old Victorian and Bay and Gable mansions. The existing double-wide site was severed into two separate properties with a four-storey, 3,500 square foot detached duplex residence constructed on each site, each with two two-storey units.

At the request of long time clients, we designed and supervised the construction of a new cabin in the Chamonix valley.  The site is located within a residential compound built in the 50’s. A cabin dating from the original master plan was on the lot.

Wingårdh transforms roofless freight depot into Malmö Market Hall

Sheets of pre-rusted red steel cover the new extension to a dilapidated freight depot in Malmö, which has been converted into a covered food market by Swedish studio Wingårdh. The clients, brother and sister Nina Totté Karyd and Martin Karyd, asked Wingårdh to convert and extend the brick shell to provide a new space for market vendors and restauranteurs in the Swedish city.
