In Little Italy, San Diego there is a shortage of apartments at a price point working class people can afford. This is driving people farther away from the city and creating a further reliance on the automobile. One of the main impetus for this increase in costs is parking. Parking takes up a tremendous amount of space, drives up construction costs, and delays construction.

From 1891 to 1993 the Columbia Congregational Church called this site home, drawing in residents to an entirely undeveloped Rainier Valley. At that time, land was often given to churches, because the City understood it could be a useful tool in creating communities and economy. After 1993, the building changed hands several times before falling vacant in 2012. Several developers had attempted to redevelop the property but failed on the hurdles of an old building, a strict zoning code, or a limited budget.

Jose studied ecology, has always approached nature, feels part of it blurring the boundaries between him and his surroundings. His house tries to do that too, spreading its elements on site and turning the garden into its circulation. José and his house question the comfort standards. For getting from bed to bathroom, you have to walk outside. Showering takes place in the middle of the plants in his greenhouse. There are places where people do not know whether they are a garden or house, or a house built by the garden.
