Five Building / QARTA architektura

November 5, 2020 Valeria Silva 0

History meets future declares the fitting motto chosen for the project Five, located in Prague 5 – Smíchov. A tram depot building occupied the project site, but that could have been called a relic even when it was built. While forming an important endpoint in the city transport system, complicated access had been its disadvantage right from the beginning. The depot building still looked almost exactly like when it was closed, years later when current renovations began. Previously it had proved too difficult to adapt for a new use, so it remained in a sort of permanent provisional state.

Situated in a cast-iron building constructed in 1872, the top floor space of a Soho building was completely built out to create a living loft and photography studio. Generous windows extend along two street frontages, providing wonderful east and north light as well as near and distant views of Soho roofscapes.

It is a 90 m2 apartment situated in the São Paulo central area. The apartment is in a typical 1950s  apartment building and it was found in its original condition.
The objective of the Project was to make use of the features so typical for this period: ample spaces, high ceilings, huge window vaults, ipê wood parquette …
Nevertheless, in order to meet new design, in addition to hydraulic and electrical installations some spatial changes were necessary too.

Due to economic misfortunes, this building on the edge of Seinäjoki town centre never became Törnavä Manor’s exemplary educational cowshed as originally intended. In fact, the same misfortunes led to the development and growth of the surrounding municipality into an eventual city. The cowshed itself was eventually finished by the insurance company Kaleva, first turned into a broadcloth factory, and then finally closed off from the public by the Finnish Defence Forces.

  1.  Project intentions

1.1.Relation with the context. –  There are dual context relations to which the project responds to. On the one hand the city/nature, where the maximum tension point is the central block -that counterpose and links both realities- and on the other hand, existing school/landscape.

The Project arises from the need of an extension of an already existing building. Initially, it was possible to verify that the actual building had a formal and purely generic organizational nature as a result of the reformulation of a basic typology and structure: “The Sausage House”.

This project is for a 97 sq m two-bedroom GIA new build house on lower ground and ground floors, built on open land just south of Whitechapel High Street, in the Stepney Green Conservation Area. This project offered a fascinating opportunity to create a dwelling from a leftover scrap of urban land. It demonstrates what can be achieved by focusing on what might be called the spirit of place, rather than approaching the design from any particular stylistic viewpoint – that is, by developing a series of dwelling spaces that address the particular characteristics of a place, or a site. The clues to the design lay in the site context of a conservation area, creating privacy and seclusion from a prominent street location, orientation for light and sun, the open sky of the gardens of adjacent properties to the south, and the desire to create a sense of a primary space as a focus for the house that appeared to be experiencedly greater than the modest scale of the house – what Gaston Bachelard has called ‘intimate immensity’.
