It is in the convergence between ancient tradition and current technology that Japanese architecture is found, where tradition composes the ambient with the permanence of the oldest habits and customs and the technology presented in a minimalist way, enhancing the surroundings.

Paul-Zobel-Strasse Apartments / Heide & Von Beckerath

The residential development is located within a spacious ten-storey housing complex in Berlin-Lichtenberg and delivers densification. The construction of additional flats and a new day-care centre for children provides the opportunity for contemporary development in the neighbourhood near Berlin’s centre and considers both individual and collective housing options. The two eight-storey residential towers react to the urban environment by being slightly offset, and a common podium helps blend them into the surroundings. The careful placement of the buildings creates a three-sided courtyard in the south, connects to an existing footpath in the west, a sequence of spaces in the east, and a sheltered garden for the day-care centre in the north.

Rattan in Concrete Jungle Apartment / Absence from Island

August 28, 2020 Andreas Luco 0

Hong Kong is famous for its cramped living space and its concrete jungle. Our client is no different from any ordinary Hongkongers. He purchased a 40 sqm flat and wished to turn it into a home for his family of three. The design aims to keep the living room large and plain while bringing in natural elements to create a relaxed and calm environment. However, the client is not willing to take care of any living plants and therefore we chose rattan, which is a famous product in nearby Guangdong, as the key material for the living room. They are used on cupboard doors where their porosity and light colour helps soften the cupboard’s existence.

Taquinho Apartment / Lez Arquitetura

August 27, 2020 Pilar Caballero 0

The owners of the “Taquinho Apartment” love Brasilia and found an excellent apartment in one of the first superblocks built in the modernist city. With an original wooden parquet floor, large windows and generous ceilings, the apartment had imminent potential, but needed a good renovation with reorganization of the flows and room divisions to accommodate the new family needs. As they often receive visits, the residents needed a large social area that would fit family and friends together. The starting point was the integration of the living room with the dining room and kitchen by demolishing the main wall, transforming the whole area into one space.

Gardenhouse / MAD Architects

Located at 8600 Wilshire Boulevard in California’s Beverly Hills, “Gardenhouse” is a mixed-use scheme consisting of 18 residential units above ground-floor commercial space. Evoking the lush landscape of Beverly Hills, the scheme becomes a “hillside village” with residential units “growing” from the building’s living green wall. Peaking above the landscaped envelope, a cluster of white façaded, irregular-shaped windows and gabled-roof structures create a dynamic neighborhood, and a playful, witty, though simple homage to the iconic hillsides of Los Angeles.

Darrous Building / Hamedart

Every project in architecture faces challenges that achieving the answer will create a specific scenario for that building. One of the features of this projects site is its small width, which made limitations in interior design (plan) and exterior (facade). On the other hand, its 2 corners allow better lighting for the building. The project is located in Amirabad neighborhood of Tehran; the entrance is from the southern and western sides. This complex has been developed in 5 floors.
