PechaKucha founders Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham to champion “world-changing” ideas at Dezeen Day

Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham to host PechaKucha at Dezeen Day

Architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Tokyo studio Klein Dytham Architecture will host a special edition of their rapid-fire presentation format PechaKucha at Dezeen Day, and are calling for designers with world-improving ideas to pitch for slots in the lineup.

There will be between six and 10 slots at the session, and Dezeen readers are invited to propose themselves as speakers.

PechaKucha, which is Japanese for “chit-chat”, is a presentation format that sees each speaker talk for 20 seconds about 20 images. This means each presentation lasts just six minutes and 40 seconds.

The PechaKucha Night format was invented by Dytham and Klein in 2003 as a way for creatives in Tokyo to share their ideas. It has since blossomed into a global network, with events held in over 1,000 cities around the world.

Klein and Dytham met at the Royal College of Art in London, and in 1989 travelled to Tokyo together where they worked for architect Toyo Ito. In 1991 they established KDa in the Japanese capital.

Projects by the studio include offices for Google Japan, a timber community hall for a city recovering from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and an airport restroom that was named Japan’s toilet of the year.

Do you have an idea that could improve the world?

Dezeen and KDa are looking for speakers for the special PechaKucha session at Dezeen Day in London on 30 October. We want suggestions that reflect the spirt of Dezeen Day, which will look to the future of architecture and design and tackle key topics such as the circular economy and new materials.

To be considered for a slot, email [email protected] with a brief (no more than 100 words) written description of what you will talk about, plus links to your work. Don’t attach files! Please note that submissions that do not follow this format will not be considered.
