Baan SudSaenSuk is a private residence located in Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province, an area distinguished by its rich artistic heritage, vernacular architecture, urban landscape, and historic significance as an important ancient city of the Lanna Kingdom. These layered qualities make Chiang Saen one of the places that most clearly reflect Lanna identity. The design concept of the house emerges from an interpretation of this local context, translating it into both material selection and architectural language that resonate with contemporary ways of living.

This project entailed the comprehensive renovation and reconfiguration of both the inside and exterior of a residence constructed in the 2000s, tailored to accommodate the preferences, comfort, and character of a family that values traditional painting and artisanal lacquerware. The house’s antiquity and several modifications, together with changes in ownership, rendered the creation of a new functional space within the existing structure a formidable challenge, despite its modest size. The refurbished residence necessitated six bedrooms, an expansive kitchen, and a primary living space for familial engagement and leisure.

On the end of a cul-de-sac, two abutting lots are joined as a paired strata. The client, a naturalist by temperament and practice, refused the usual total capture of land and opted to hold one of the parcel as a private garden. On the adjacent plot, a disciplined mass of fair-faced concrete is lifted and aligned into a private residence for a family of five. The project begins as a double articulation: a block that codes and orders, and an adjoining ground that remains open to drift, an interstratum between built form and the site’s wider continuities.
