SOT-TÌ-LE. As the name reveals, Sottile House is about subtlety petrified in an architectural gesture, where a 50m prism sits on the hill to observe the vegetation mass that presents the view towards which the residence is oriented.

The plot, very long but nevertheless wide, faced the street in the low level and a big field in the high level. This difference of  heights creates a big difference of quadrats, almost creating two separate worlds in the same plot. The existing house in schist holds a romanic church capitel in its facade and arose an initial debate of how to preserve it with the local authorities, due the state of total ruin and the intentions to extend the house to more than its double .

Architecture and Landscape: 10 Projects Integrated in the Topography

As a starting point for architectural projects, the terrain and its topography point out the directions that the distribution of the program can follow. Among them, one solution stands out for the continuity between topography and architecture: lowering the level of construction and advancing the land over the roof. From this roof garden created with the same characteristics as the surroundings, the result gives the impression of an almost non-existent intervention.

FG House / Bernardes Arquitetura

FG House was designed for a condominium about an hour and a half from São Paulo downtown for a couple and their children and arises from the fragmentation of the program through four trapezoidal volumes of pigmented concrete, in a harmonious arrangement on the 12,152 square meter plot and joined by the same linear axis.

Pergola House / Atelier in.vitro

Pergola House’s project involves the expansion of an existing building, creating two new volumes on top of the existing garage and storage room, located at two different levels facing West and North, respectively. The purpose was to assume the expansion works as new, but, at the same time, merge it with the house and surrounding areas. The difference between the existing and the proposed was achieved mainly through the use of different materials, scale of doors, windows and different styled roof.

The challenge was to create a wellness and mindfulness center based on the idea of community life at Serra da Estrela Nature Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark site and Portugal’s oldest and largest conservation area. The chosen property already included a number of preexisting buildings, which allowed developing the project despite the many constraints that limit any intervention in a conservation area.

São Lázaro Apartments / Floret Arquitectura

This is a collective housing building on a regular plot in the heart of Porto, on Passeio de São Lázaro. The building has two fronts, one oriented for the Passeio de São Lázaro and the other to the interior. It also has a small patio that was allocated to one of the aparta- ment. The project proposed the demolition of the interior, already very changed, in order to rebuild the building, rehabilitating the existing facade and expanding it by two floors to hide the existing gable with the adjacent building.

Labyrinth Playground / Vazio S/A

The Labyrinth Playground was built in the gardens of Palácio das Mangabeiras, the former residence of the governor of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Since 2019, the Palace has become a park open to public visitation and shows. The Labyrinth is part of the park’s permanent public spaces and is also part of the temporary exhibitions circuit.
