Domus Peepem is the latest in a series of interventions that, through new housing schemes and the regeneration of public space, aims to recover a portion of the urban fabric. It is located in Cancun, one of the most important tourist centers in the country, with marked socioeconomic contrasts. The central idea of these interventions has been to build sustainable buildings, with a social vocation, integrating instead of distancing.
The Program
The buildings house a residential complex made up of 125 apartments, garages, and storage rooms, which during the project and commissioning process have allowed the development of 22 different types of apartments, both on a single floor and in duplex format. The complex is exclusively dedicated to residential use. In addition to the apartments, there is a free space for public use and three covered community spaces: a children’s playroom, a gym, and a dining room.
Montblanc Haus is an exhibition center dedicated to the art of writing located next to the current factory of the Montblanc company on the outskirts of Hamburg. The project was conceived as a 100 m long volume that evokes the shape of a writing instrument case and hides a complex sequence of spaces on three levels articulated around a single vestibule illuminated from above. The building, with a surface area of 3,600 m2, houses a permanent exhibition that invites visitors to discover and experience writing through the history of pens and precision instruments that are part of the Montblanc archive.
The house is located in José Ignacio, Uruguay. It was designed as a summer home for a family of four, but the pandemic made them decide to move there permanently.
The Jaime Rentería child development center is located in Siloé, a popular area with more than one hundred years of social and cultural history in the city of Cali. Its informal origin arises from the settlements of mining families when coal exploitation predominated in the area.
The house is located on the border that separates a suburban development of single-family houses and a protected forest area. The main strategy followed in the project is to let the house take advantage of this special location and make the most of its double condition by merging them both; the wild nature of the forest on the one hand and the built or suburban environment on the other.
This house is located on a cliff west of Havana, surrounded by the sea. Despite having a large program size required, we had the intuition that the house should use itself to hide in the landscape and maintain the characteristics of an existing old house: its 14m x 14m perimeter, gabled roof and portal on all four sides.
If for a moment we decontextualize and take the famous Mies’ quote “less is more” literally, we could end up arguing that the primary preoccupation of architecture should be demolishing and not building. It is of course an argument that can’t be taken seriously as a universal dogma, but Ungers and Koolhaas have already explored in their seminal project Berlin as a Green Archipelago, how useful voiding could be in some specific scenarios. We thought that The Casa Chorizo project could be one of them.
